It’s important for young soccer players to get a taste of every position on the field — including, when they’re ready, goalkeeper. Typically, keepers aren’t part of the game until kids are a little bit older and more experienced, around age 9 or 10. By then, the idea is that they’ve mastered at least some of the fundamentals, and can move on to positions.

Goalkeepers need to have many of the same basic skills as other soccer players — from ball control to understanding the overall flow of the game. But as the last line of defense, the keeper’s role is a unique one. These 101s help developing goalkeepers master the art of stopping the goal and distributing the ball.

Corner kicks in soccer offer valuable scoring opportunities and can be game-changers. Here, we’ll delve into the best approaches for executing a corner kick and discuss various strategies teams can employ:

Technique: When taking a corner kick, it’s crucial to focus on technique. The player should place the ball within the corner arc and take a few steps back to create momentum. As they approach the ball, they should aim to strike it cleanly, using the inside of their foot for accuracy or the laces for power. Proper body positioning, such as leaning slightly over the ball, can help achieve the desired trajectory and control.

Delivery: The delivery of a corner kick is key to its effectiveness. There are several approaches to consider:

a. Near Post: The kicker aims to deliver the ball close to the near post, challenging the goalkeeper and creating confusion among defenders. This strategy requires precise ball placement and can be effective when combined with attackers making runs towards the near post.

b. Far Post: The objective is to aim the corner kick towards the far post, where attacking players can position themselves to win aerial duels and direct the ball towards the goal. Accurate delivery and timing are crucial for this strategy to succeed.

c. Short Corner: Instead of crossing the ball directly, the kicker plays a short pass to a nearby teammate. This approach can catch the defense off guard and create opportunities for quick combinations, dribbling, or shots on goal from a different angle.

Attack Strategies:

a. Zonal Marking: Teams can utilize zonal marking during corner kicks. Each defender is responsible for a specific zone or area in the penalty box. Attackers aim to exploit gaps between defenders and create space for headers or shots. Players should time their runs and attempt to lose their markers by making sudden movements.

b. Man-Marking: Alternatively, teams may opt for man-marking, assigning defenders to mark specific opponents during corner kicks. This approach requires good communication and coordination to ensure every attacking player is closely marked. Attackers can use various tactics to shake off their markers, such as using screens or making sharp changes of direction.

c. Dummy Runs: To confuse the defense, players can make dummy runs, where one or more attackers move towards the ball as if they are about to receive the corner kick. This action can draw defenders away from their positions, creating space for other attackers to exploit.

Variations and Set Plays: Teams often develop set plays and variations for corner kicks. These routines involve pre-planned movements and positioning to create specific scoring opportunities. Examples include:

a. Short Corner Routines: Teams can employ intricate passing combinations or clever dribbling moves to confuse the defense and create shooting opportunities from close range.

b. Blocking or Screening: Attackers position themselves strategically to block or screen defenders, allowing teammates to have a free header or a clear shot at goal.

c. Back Post Runs: Attackers make late runs towards the back post, timing their movements to meet the ball and direct it towards the goal.

In summary, successful corner kicks require technique, delivery, and well-executed strategies. Players must focus on accurate ball placement and make strategic decisions regarding near post, far post, or short corner options. Attack strategies can vary between zonal marking, man-marking, and utilizing dummy runs to create scoring opportunities. Teams can further enhance their effectiveness by incorporating set plays and variations, capitalizing on specific strengths and exploiting defensive weaknesses.

Hey Team and Soccer Families,

It’s Coach Mick back with you. Today, we’re talking about a special group of players on the soccer field – the goalkeepers. Being a goalkeeper requires a unique set of skills and a lot of courage. Here are some basic tips and techniques that can help our aspiring goalies.

Positioning

Positioning is crucial for a goalkeeper. They should always be aware of their positioning relative to the goal, the ball, and the opponents. Being in the right place at the right time can often make the difference between a save and a goal.

Catching and Handling

Catching is a goalkeeper’s primary tool. The ‘W’ grip, where the thumbs form a ‘W’ behind the ball, is a basic and important technique for catching balls that come at chest or head height. For low balls, ‘scoop’ them up using both hands like a shovel.

Diving

Diving can be scary for new goalkeepers, but it’s a key skill. Practice diving onto soft surfaces like grass or mats, leading with the hands and landing safely on the side.

Kicking and Throwing

Goalkeepers start a lot of plays. This can be done by throwing the ball to a teammate or by kicking it down the field. Practice both techniques to improve accuracy and distance.

Communication

Goalkeepers have a unique view of the field and should use it to their advantage. Communicate with teammates, letting them know about potential threats and directing the defense.

Remember, being a goalkeeper isn’t just about stopping shots; it’s about organizing the defense and starting attacks. It takes a brave player to step into goal, but it’s a crucial role on the team.

Keep practicing, keep learning, and remember to always have fun on the field.

Catch you on the pitch,

Coach Mick

Hello Team and Soccer Families,

Coach Mick here again with a crucial topic that goes beyond the soccer field. We all understand the importance of both academics and sports in a child’s life. But finding the right balance can be a challenge. Here are some tips to help our young athletes manage schoolwork while still excelling in soccer.

1. Planning is Key:

Having a well-structured plan or schedule can help manage time effectively. Make sure there’s a set time for homework, studying, soccer practice, and leisure. Having a visual reminder, like a calendar or planner, can help track assignments and training schedules.

2. Prioritize Tasks:

Not all tasks are equally urgent or important. Teach your child to identify which tasks require immediate attention and which can be scheduled for later. This skill, called prioritization, is crucial for managing both schoolwork and soccer commitments.

3. Stay Organized:

Keeping things organized can save a lot of time and stress. Encourage your child to keep their schoolwork and soccer gear organized. This includes maintaining a neat workspace for studying and ensuring their soccer kit is ready before practice or match day.

4. Use Time Wisely:

Time management is a vital skill for everyone, not just student-athletes. Encourage your child to make good use of their time. This might mean doing homework or studying during downtime at school or reading while traveling to and from soccer practice.

5. Communication is Crucial:

Encourage your child to communicate with their teachers and me, their coach. If there’s a big game coming up, it might be necessary to talk to their teachers about deadlines. Similarly, if there are crucial exams, we can work around it in our training schedule.

6. Rest and Relaxation:

While it’s important to excel in both academics and soccer, it’s equally crucial for your child to get enough rest. Ensure they have time to relax and unwind. Remember, they’re still kids, and they need time to just be kids.

Balancing schoolwork and soccer isn’t always easy, but with the right strategies, it’s certainly achievable. The skills our young players learn from this balance – like time management, prioritization, and communication – will not only help them in school and soccer but also in life.

As always, let’s work together to help our kids shine both on the field and in the classroom.

See you on the pitch!

Hello Team and Soccer Families,

Coach Mick here! Today, let’s talk about a skill that can really make a difference in a game – heading the ball. It can be a thrilling sight to see a player leap and direct a well-timed header into the back of the net or clear a dangerous ball from the defense. But headers need to be performed safely and effectively. Here’s how.

Safety First

Safety should always be the top priority when it comes to headers. Given recent research on concussions and heading, it’s essential to follow the U.S. Soccer guidelines which prohibit players aged 10 and under from heading the ball in practice or games, and limit the amount of heading for players aged 11-13.

Technique is Key

The correct technique can make your headers more effective and safer. Here are some key points:

Positioning: Anticipate the flight of the ball and position yourself correctly. Use your arms for balance and to protect yourself.

Neck Strength: A strong neck can help control the direction and speed of the header. Regular neck strengthening exercises can help.

Contact: Aim to make contact with the ball on your forehead, the hardest part of your head. Keep your eyes open and on the ball.

Follow Through: The direction you move your head when heading the ball will dictate the ball’s direction. Follow through towards your target.

Practice Makes Perfect

Like any soccer skill, practice makes perfect. Once players are of an age where heading is allowed and safe, they can begin to practice with soft balls before moving on to regular soccer balls. This can help them become comfortable with the technique without the fear of pain or injury.

Remember, soccer is a game meant to be played primarily on the ground, with feet. While headers can add an exciting dimension to the game, they must always be performed with safety in mind.

Stay safe and keep practicing,

Hello Team and Soccer Families,

Coach Mick here! Today, let’s talk about a fun and incredibly beneficial soccer skill – juggling the soccer ball. It’s not just a cool trick to show off to your friends but also a great way to improve your overall game.

What is Soccer Juggling?

Juggling is the act of keeping the soccer ball in the air by bouncing it off your feet, thighs, chest, or head, without letting it touch the ground. Sounds challenging, right? Well, like any other skill, it takes practice, but the rewards are worth the effort.

Why Learn to Juggle?

Improves Ball Control: Juggling helps develop a feel for the ball. It improves your touch and control, making you comfortable with the ball at your feet and other parts of your body, essential for receiving passes and controlling the ball under pressure in a game.

Enhances Coordination and Balance: Juggling requires and improves your overall coordination and balance. It forces you to use both feet and maintain balance while focusing on the ball.

Strengthens Concentration: Juggling requires a great deal of focus. This increased concentration carries over to the field, where maintaining focus is crucial for making good decisions and plays.

Boosts Confidence: As your juggling skills improve, so will your confidence. Confidence in your ball handling can lead to improved performance on the field.

How to Start Juggling?

Start with one bounce, then two, then three, gradually increasing as you get more comfortable. Don’t worry about using your weaker foot at first; just focus on getting the basics right. As you progress, try to use both feet and even other parts of your body like your thighs and head.

Remember, juggling is not about how high you can kick the ball but about control and touch. So, keep the ball close to you, keep your eyes on the ball, and most importantly, be patient with yourself. Progress might be slow, but with consistent practice, you’ll definitely improve.

So get out there and start juggling! It’s a great way to improve your skills, even if you’re just kicking around in the backyard.

Keep practicing, keep improving, and most importantly, keep enjoying the beautiful game of soccer.

See you on the pitch!

Hey Team and Soccer Families,

Coach Mick here again, today we’re going to delve into the world of defending, specifically mastering the one-on-one situation. A defender’s ability to handle 1v1 situations can be the difference between preventing a goal and watching the ball hit the back of the net. Here are some tips to help our players win those vital 1v1 battles.

Patience is Key

In a 1v1 scenario, it’s crucial for defenders to remain patient. Don’t dive in; instead, stay on your feet and wait for the attacker to make the first move. The aim is to force the attacker into a mistake or into a less dangerous area of the pitch.

Positioning

Position yourself goal-side and slightly sideways (giving you the ability to move in any direction). Keep your eyes on the ball, not the player’s feet, and always stay between the ball and the goal.

Body Shape

Your body shape is key in 1v1 situations. Keep a low centre of gravity and be ready to change direction quickly. Stay balanced, with your knees slightly bent and your weight on the balls of your feet.

Timing

Timing is everything when it comes to tackling. Launch your attempt when the attacker takes a heavier touch, or when they look down at the ball. Timing your tackle wrong could result in a free kick, penalty, or worse.

Communication

Communication is key to good defending. Make sure to talk to your fellow defenders to ensure they’re aware of any imminent threats. You should also communicate with your goalkeeper who has a better view of the overall scenario.

Defending can sometimes feel less glamorous than scoring goals, but remember, the saying goes “offense wins games, defense wins championships.”

Keep practicing, stay patient, and you’ll master the art of 1v1 defending.

See you on the pitch,

Hey Team and Soccer Families,

Coach Mick here with you again! Today, let’s explore a vital aspect of soccer that sometimes gets overlooked – footwork. Great footwork can give you an edge on the pitch, allowing you to control the ball better, evade defenders, and create scoring opportunities. Here’s how to improve your footwork.

Ball Control Drills

One of the best ways to improve your footwork is to work on your ball control. Simple drills, like tapping the ball between your feet, dribbling in tight spaces, or practicing different turns and tricks, can all help to improve your agility and touch on the ball.

Speed Ladder Drills

Speed ladder drills are another fantastic way to improve footwork. They can help to increase speed, agility, and coordination, all of which are crucial for effective footwork on the pitch.

Balance Exercises

Balance is a key aspect of good footwork. Simple balance exercises, such as standing on one foot, can be very beneficial. As you improve, you can make these exercises more challenging by adding a ball or introducing movement.

Playing Small-Sided Games

Small-sided games are excellent for improving footwork. With fewer players and a smaller pitch, you’ll get more touches on the ball and will need to rely on your footwork to keep possession.

Regular Practice

Improving footwork is like improving any other skill – it requires regular practice. Spend some time each week working on these drills, and you’ll see a big difference in your footwork over time.

Remember, good footwork isn’t just about fancy tricks or fast feet. It’s about being able to control the ball under pressure, keep possession, and make the right decisions on the pitch.

Keep practicing and having fun,

Penalty kicks in soccer are the ultimate duel between a shooter and a goalkeeper. The high stakes and pressure on both parties make for some of the most thrilling moments in the game. As a coach, I’ve worked with many goalkeepers on honing the perfect strategy for blocking penalty kicks. Let’s break down the strategies and discuss how you can increase your chances of successfully blocking a penalty kick.

Mind Over Matter

The first step in preparing for a penalty kick starts in the mind. Building your confidence and maintaining focus can be intimidating for the penalty taker. Never underestimate the power of psychological preparation. You can use tactics such as eye contact and confident body language to apply pressure on the shooter.

The Art of Anticipation

Your ability to read the shooter’s body language, positioning, and approach is critical. Pay attention to subtle cues that might give away the shooter’s intended direction. A keen sense of anticipation can be a goalkeeper’s best friend during a penalty kick.

React With Lightning Speed

Penalty kicks are all about speed. You must be ready to spring into action at a moment’s notice. Keep on the balls of your feet, primed to explode in the direction of the shot.

Study The Patterns

Players often have patterns when they take penalty kicks. Some might favor the corners, while others might aim for the center. Studying their patterns can help you predict their shot placement and increase your chances of making a save.

Perfect Your Diving Technique

An effective dive can make all the difference when blocking a penalty kick. Make sure to take a decisive step in your chosen direction, drive off your supporting leg, and fully extend your arms to cover as much ground as possible.

Play Mind Games

As the goalkeeper, you can use mind games to disrupt the shooter’s focus and timing. Slight delays or small movements on the goal line can cause the shooter to second guess their strategy.

Master Goal Line Positioning

Your position on the goal line can be crucial in blocking a penalty kick. Depending on the shooter’s tendencies, you may choose to position yourself in the center or favor one side of the goal.

The Power of Research and Analysis

In-depth knowledge about your opponents can give you an edge. By studying their penalty-taking habits, you can prepare yourself better and increase your chances of making a save.

Trust Your Instincts

While it’s essential to prepare and strategize, remember that instinct and adaptability are just as important. Trust your gut and be ready to adjust your position or diving direction as needed.

Anatomy of a Penalty Kick: The Plant Foot

An often overlooked but crucial part of blocking a penalty kick is reading the shooter’s plant foot. This is the foot that is placed on the ground, while the other foot strikes the ball. The direction of the plant foot can often provide clues about where the shot is aimed.

Start by observing the position and alignment of the shooter’s plant foot as they approach the ball. If the foot is angled to the left, the shot is likely going to the left side of the net, and vice versa.

In addition to the plant foot, consider the shooter’s overall body alignment. If their hips and shoulders are aligned towards a specific side, it further supports the likelihood of a shot in that direction.

Use this information to react swiftly and adjust your position accordingly. But remember to stay adaptable and trust your instincts. The direction of the plant foot is just one clue, and you’ll need to factor in other cues as well.

Practicing this skill will improve your reaction time and enhance your chances of blocking the penalty kick successfully. Remember that the key to becoming a formidable goalkeeper lies in combining skills, anticipation, adaptability, and mental fortitude. Keep practicing, and you’ll be saving more penalty kicks in no time!

Onwards and upwards, Coach Mick
